Starting Where the People Are: The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). Carnegie Quarterly, Volume XXXII, Number 2.
Carnegie Quarterly, v32 n2 Spr 1987
This issue of the "Carnegie Quarterly" describes three projects that are being conducted by the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). The projects are the following: (1) building community participation in health care at Lake Kenyatta; (2) the role of community education in disease control among the Turkana people at Lokichoggio; and (3) working with the women of Kibwezi to improve food, water, and health. The common theme running through each of these projects is the need to meet the people where they are, to see the situation through their eyes, and to work with them toward solutions, rather than to impose "solutions" from outside. Sources of the project descriptions are given for those who want to obtain more information. (KC)
