The data presented in this report come from the Bureau of the Census in the annual Survey of Industrial Research and Development. Information includes: (1) R&D expenditures by U.S. firms rose 12% between 1977 and 1978 to a total of $33.4 billion; (2) the increases in U.S. industrial R&D activity reflected in R&D funding were confirmed in employment data which showed an increase of 6% in the full-time-equivalents (FTE) of industrial scientists and engineers engaged in research and development; (3) company-funded R&D, when related to net sales, has shown a high degree of stability over time; and (4) there has been an 18% annual rise in industrial R&D expenditures for energy.
