Living arrangements of college students from 1958 to 1976 are examined through statistics compiled in one of the Census Bureau's "Current Population Reports." It is noted that changes in the characteristics of college students during the 1970's have resulted in changes in the students' living arrangements. Major shifts between 1958 and 1976 in the choice of living arrangements are evident. In 1958 significantly more college students lived with parents or relatives than lived either in dormitories or in their own households. The number of students living with parents has decreased as of 1976. It is suggested that the expenses of living away from home may be a major factor in college choice. The data also indicate that four-year colleges and universities are more likely to provide on-campus housing than two-year colleges. Family income and year of college, as well as marital status, desire to be independent, and increased government support for college costs have had an effect on students' residence choices. Appended are definitions and explanations of the statistical data as well as a discussion of the sources and reliability of the figures. (SF)
