This pamphlet is the third in a series of ten stemming from the view that language is central to learning, that teachers can gain insights into their work and into learning by examining the language of the classroom, and that current language theory can be the means to such insights. Specifically, the pamphlet presents ideas drawn from a five-year expressive language project developed in an inner city school. The various sections deal with the following topics: the dimensions of expressive language, its basis in the work of James Britton, urgencies in contemporary education, expressive language in the elementary classroom, the teacher as human, the representation of experience, the overt persuaders, student growth, the need to accept the expressive, the need for schools to emphasize language learning, and the difficulties in accepting the expressive. The pamphlet also contains a list of educators who participated in the project. Many excerpts from student writings and from transcripts of classroom discussions are included. (FL)
