Transcending the Rhetoric of "Family Values": Celebrating Families of Choice and Families of Value. The 2008 Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Allies (LGBTQ&A) Pre-Conference
Bettinger, Thomas V., Ed.
Online Submission, Adult Education Research Conference (49th, St. Louis, MO, June 5-7, 2008)
This pre-conference, held in conjunction with the 49th annual Adult Education Research Conference at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in June, 2008, brought together graduate students and adult education researchers and practitioners from a variety of academic and workplace settings to discuss issues related to sexual minorities in institutions of higher education and the workplace. Regardless of one's personal position on such issues, adult educators need to be equipped with knowledge and skills to adapt to the tumult and controversy that is inherent in a context of dynamic and rapidly shifting norms; and to manage classroom or workplace conflict such that difference becomes an asset to learning rather than a divisive element. These proceedings offer practical considerations and implications on a variety of related topics including historical retrospectives on the exclusion/inclusion of sexual minorities' voices in the field of adult education; the changing nature of societal views towards sexual minorities, same gender marriage, and other social mores, and the impacts such issues have on adult educators; educational strategies for social change; educational considerations of a workplace transition of transgender persons; and podcasting as a educational vehicle for both personal and social transformation. (Contents include the following eleven papers, which are referenced individually: (1) (A retrospective on the LGBTQ&A Caucus/SIG and Pre-Conference) Hidden & Displayed: Queer Memory Work Revisited (Robert J. Hill); (2) For Better, for Worse, or Not at All: Re-conceptualizing the Meaning of Family and Valuing All Families (Thomas V. Bettinger); (3) On the Origin of Families: A Metaphorical Darwinian Perspective of LGBTQ Families (Tamara Priestley); (4) Adult Learning in the Queer Nation: A Foucauldian Analysis of Educational Strategies for Social Change (Wayland Walker); (5) Educational Considerations for the Workplace Family Regarding Transgender Persons (Patricia J. Brainard); (6) Lesbianism as the Practice of Freedom (Julie Gedro); (7) Why Heterosexual African Americans Should Support Same-Gender Marriage (Joyce McNickles); (8) Racist and Homophobic Bullying in Adulthood: Narratives from Gay Men of Color in Higher Education (Mitsunori Misawa); (9) Joining The Family: Experiences of Be(com)ing Ally Activists (Matthew A.
