Four group summary papers from an Australian national workshop on discourse analysis discuss verbal and written discourse and the classroom. Papers reflect the four workshop discussion groups of casual conversation, classroom discourse, expository discourse, and literary narrative. They include: "On Casual Conversation" (M. A. K. Halliday and G. Plum); "A Knock on the Door: An Analysis of Classroom Discourse" (R. F. Walker, F. Christie, B. Horvath, J. Rothery, and M. MacCausland); "On the Analysis of Exposition" (J. R. Martin, and P. Peters); and "Discourse Structures in Literary Narrative: Examples from Graham Greene's 'Jubilee': (D. G. Butt and L. M. O'Toole). Each paper addresses the issue from a theoretical and practical viewpoint, using real-world examples, and offers suggestions and implications to the field.
