Family Research and Demonstration Symposium Report.
Friesen, Barbara J.; And Others
This symposium report is designed to provide guidance about major conceptual and methodological issues in research relating to families whose children have emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders. Participants in the symposium identified historical themes, dominant constructs, methodological issues, and recent developments related to family research in children's mental health. Four research areas for further development were then identified, and each research area was assigned to a work group, which defined the area and identified further research issues. The four areas were: parent-professional collaborations and training systems; family support and family advocacy; multicultural competence; and financing of family support and family-centered services. Participants then generated recommendations regarding conceptual and material support needed to advance the research agenda. Appendixes contain a list of participants; outlines of presentations by Joan Patterson and George Singer; a list of family research themes and topics; and a list of eight references and resources.
