Images of Potential [Report of a Working Conference of the Learning Tomorrow Project (Racine, Wisconsin, January 1989)].
National Foundation for the Improvement of Education, Washington, DC.
In order to catalyze the exploration, planning, and implementation of successful technology integration into schools, the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) hosted Stage I of the national initiative, Learning Tomorrow, in January 1989. Thirty-eight professionals, including classroom teachers, school facilities designers, hardware and software producers, and futures researchers, convened in Racine, Wisconsin, for a 2-day working conference in which they developed scenarios of the learning environment with technology utilized to support education. Working in six teams, the participants produced scenarios distinguished by stage of student development and geographic context. The six scenarios included in this report describe learning environments in a rural elementary school, middle school, and high school, and in an urban (or suburban) elementary school, middle school, and high school. Among the issues discussed by the groups and addressed in the scenarios are the availability of family and social support structures, the nature of communities, the types of social and intellectual skills that students will require to be successful as adults, and the projected needs of the workforce. Appended is a glossary of terms used in the report. (GL)
