Topics covered in papers presented at a Finnish workshop on discourse analysis include, in English: the situational code in conversation; persuasive strategies and face-work in impromptu speech; historical aspects of complex behavioral strategies in politeness; the implications of predictability and unpredictability for negotiation discourse; and discourse analysis and the translator. Papers in Finnish address these topics: units of conversation and switches from one person to another; the pragmatic concept of politeness and modal auxiliaries; the discourse structure of lecture monologue; strategies in the essays written by Finnish high school students; and pauses, repairs, and hesitation in simultaneous interpretation.
