Conference proceedings on the Native American Press in Wisconsin and the Nation present speeches and presentations pertaining to current American Indian publications and examples of analysis and synthesis created by Indian scholars. Topics of speeches presented include: an interpretive framework for Native American discourse; the early years of Indian publications (1828 to the Civil War); a survey of Native American journalism from the Civil War to the present; women in Native American journalism; a report on efforts made by the Council of Energy Resource Tribes in journalism; a biography of Boudinot, a Cherokee editor; how news concerning Native Americans is reported in Alaska; a research report on the Native American press bibliographies; and a case study on contemporary Native American discourse. Representatives from various tribal newspapers describe their publications' activities. Newspapers represented are the Circle, Wind River Journal, Menominee Tribal News, Lac Courte Oreilles Journal, and Zoar's Weekly Information. Appendices pertaining to Freedom of the Press on Indian reservations and listings of conference speakers and conferees conclude the proceedings. (ERB)
