The report drawn from the first annual conference that was designed to provide professional dialogue for those interested in the improvement of college reading programs, this volume contains seven papers that deal with the following topics: the role of literary criticism and rhetoric in developing new models of reading comprehension, a pilot reading center program for the functionally illiterate adult, a self-directed junior college reading program, the problems involved in establishing an effective developmental reading program, an examination of the services offered by the personnel in a junior college reading program, the place of phonics in teaching college students to read, and instructor attitudes toward presenting phonics as a part of reading instruction.
