This book contains the 72 papers presented and discussed at the 1962 International Reading Association conference. The book is divided into five parts: the keynote address, ("Challenge and Experiment in the Teaching of Reading"), 30 papers that expand the theme set by the keynote address, 21 research studies in reading fields, 10 evaluations of various phases of reading instruction in the United States, and 11 papers presented in discussion sessions that preceded the conference. Papers discuss aspects of reading instruction at all educational levels, teaching methods, content reading, teacher education, use of instructional materials, reading programs, reading comprehension, reading skills, and multimedia instruction.
