Trust in Education: Truths and Values. Discourse, Power, Resistance. Volume 8
Satterthwaite, Jerome, Ed.; Piper, Heather, Ed.; Sikes, Pat, Ed.; Webster, Simon, Ed.
Trentham Books Ltd
We need to trust people and institutions, values and truths. But where should we turn to find which are trustworthy? Does trusting make us vulnerable to abuse? Is it safe for learners - the children, young people and adults in the world of contemporary education - to trust their teachers to care, and to tell them the truth? and can teachers trust their managers and institutional practices? This book examines the nature and role of trust in contemporary culture where consoling traditional certainties are lost. The "Discourse, Power, Resistance" series has established a reputation for radical critique of the values and practices of contemporary education, and for the steady affirmation of what is best and most significant in emerging educational discourse. The writers in this, DPR volume 8, are drawn from five countries. They present a penetrating critical analyses of the breakdown of trust in contemporary culture and especially in education. They offer down-to-earth accounts of what is needed on the way ahead if that trust is to be recovered. This book contains two parts. Part One, Trust, contains: (1) Truths and Values: Education in a Cynical and Sceptical Society (Jerome Satterthwaite); (2) Trust the Education System... To Be Racist (David Gillborn); (3) Wavering Conditions of Trust and Resistance (Ruth L. Smith); and (4) Dance Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee: Moments of Trust, Power and Heautogogic Leadership in Post-Compulsory Education (Jill Jameson). Part Two, Education, Truths and Values, contains: (5) Becoming a European Citizen: Education to Overcome Mistrust (Sieglinde Weyringer); (6) Becoming a European Union Citizen: Getting to the End of the Highway to Heaven (Kamila Kaminska); (7) Trust and Rationality: Epistemic Tensions in Managerialism and Pupil Voice in Schools (Howard Gibson and Jo Backus); and (9) On the Edge of Chaos: Inner City Schools and the Unequal Burden of Uncertainty (Ewa Sidorenko). A series introduction by Elizabeth Atkinson and an introduction by Heather Piper, Jerome Satterthwaite, Pat Sikes and Simon Webster are included.
