Troxel, Wendy G., Ed.; Cutright, Marc, Ed.
National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition
For more than 25 years, educators have developed and institutionalized efforts to help first-year students succeed. This monograph collects case studies from 22 institutions that have created programs and initiatives to support their first-year students. The programs range from encouraging civic engagement and academic achievements to institutional structures that aid in the delivery of programs to entering students. Following a Preface (Betsy Barefoot); and Foreword (Wendy Troxel and Marc Cutright), contents include; (1) Civic Engagement and Service Learning (Georgia State University; Millersville University; Texas A&M--Corpus Christi); (2) Early Intervention--Diagnostic Tools (Cuyamaca College; Northern Arizona University; University of South Carolina); (3) First-Year Advising (Bridgewater State College; Indiana Wesleyan University); (4) "Linked" Learning Communities (Slippery Rock University; University of Michigan; Wagner College; Wright State University); (5) Organization and Assessment of Multilayered Programs (Montclair State University; University of Minnesota); (6) Designing and Assessing First-Year Seminars (Concordia University; Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis; Wilkes University); (7) Problem-Based Learning (Discipline-Based) (United Arab Emirates University; West Virginia University); and (8) Student-Faculty Interaction (Gallaudet University; University of Georgia; Western Illinois University).
