Counselor Supervision: Principles, Process, and Practice. Third Edition.
Bradley, Loretta J., Ed.; Ladany, Nicholas, Ed.
This book is intended for practitioners working in a variety of educational and mental health settings. It reviews and critiques primary supervision theories with the intent of informing supervisor practitioners, counselor educators, and supervisor trainees on issues of best practice. This third edition includes timely topics such as multicultural issues in counselor supervision; the supervisory relationship and its influence on supervision process and outcome; ethical and advocacy issues in supervision; group supervision; and supervisor training. Case examples are used throughout the book to illustrate the application of theory to practical issues that counselor supervisors encounter. The fifteen chapters of the book are divided into four major sections. In Part 1, "Counselor Supervision: Essentials for Training" (L.J. Bradley, J.A. Kottler; J.L. Muse-Burke, N. Ladany, M. Deck, J.R. Ancis) basic principles, roles, and functions are reviewed. Effective supervisory interventions are considered, along with a framework for understanding supervision from a multicultural perspective. Part 2, "Theoretical Approaches to Counselor Supervision" (L.J. Bradley, L.J. Gould, G.D. Parr, P.O. Whiting, K.J. Planny), provides an overview of the primary theoretical models of supervision. Part 3, "Specialized Models of Counselor Supervision" (R.L. Hayes, L.S. Blackman, C. Brennan, S. Magnuson, K. Norem, L.J. Bradley, M.K. Bronson, M. Kaufman, K.J. Morgen, N. Ladany) discusses supervision models that include group supervision, supervision of school counselors, supervision of career counselors, and supervision of family counselors. Part 4, "Professional Issues in Counselor Supervision" (L.J. Gould, L.J. Bradley, N. Ladany, J.L. Muse-Burke, J.A. Lewis, J.R. Cheek, C.B. Hendricks, J.A. Kottler, D. Lehrman-Waterman, P.O. Whiting), discusses such issues as trainee evaluation, supervision, research, integrating advocacy into practice, and ethical principles and guidelines. (Contains 13 tables and 1,363 references.)
