Barrios and Borderlands. Cultures of Latinos and Latinas in the United States.
Heyck, Denis Lynn Daly
This anthology of creative works and essays paints a portrait of the rich and complex mixture of Latino cultures in the United States. The collection is broadly inclusive in terms of genre, discipline, and ethnicity and is intended for readers interested in any or all of the major aspects of Latino culture. The book is organized around six cultural themes: (1) family; (2) religion; (3) community; (4) the arts; (5) immigration, migration, and exile; and (6) cultural identity. Readings include short stories, poems, essays, excerpts from novels, a play, photographs, and a few songs and recipes. A special feature is the inclusion of interviews and oral histories of Latinos from diverse walks of life and geographical areas. The selections highlight the fact that there are many Latino cultures in the United States, and they illustrate that Latino cultures are not an American problem, they are a cultural treasure. A chronology of Latino events is presented. An appendix contains six tables of statistics about Latinos, and a glossary defines relevant words. (Contains 36 references.) (SLD)
