The articles contained in this report represent a diverse collection of pedagogical issues involved in teacher training at a distance in countries throughout the world. Distance education offers pre-service and in-service teachers with both skills training and an opportunity to complete teacher training programs or degrees. The proliferation of teacher training programs via distance is limited neither to developed or developing countries, nor is it limited to specific delivery methods. This proliferation is the result of rapidly developing telecommunications technologies coupled with an increasing awareness of the ways to use the technologies for teacher training. This overview of teacher training through distance education includes several issues: (1) the objectives for the use of distance education in teacher training; (2) methods and delivery systems used in various settings; (3) costs involved in the design and delivery of teacher training at a distance; and (4) lessons learned, which may provide the reader with guidelines to follow.
