Exploring Values and Standards: Implications for Assessment.
Andrias, Jane; And Others
This publication presents five essays by teachers on accountability, particularly the descriptive review format for elementary and secondary education. Following a brief foreword, an opening essay, "Children's Values and Standards: Investigating Sources" (Cecelia Traugh), describes issues of teacher and student values and standards which lie at the center of the monograph. The following study, "When a Teacher's Values Clash with School Values: Documenting Children's Progress" (Lynne Yermanock Strieb), describes the conflict in values and standards between a teacher's methods of record keeping and her school district's required record book. Another essay, "Mary" (Cecelia Traugh), describes one student who is a thinker and learner, and how the standards she holds for her work and the conflicting standards that the school has for her constrict her educational experience. A different study, "Kenny" (Jane Andrias), describes the clash of values and standards between a boy and his high school where his ways of making sense of life and what he values are blocked by school standards and practices. The final piece, "The Descriptive Review of a Child: Teachers Learn about Values" (Rhonda Drucker Kanevsky), outlines the descriptive review process, format, values, standards, and assumptions; and discusses implications of this approach for assessment and evaluation. An appendix contains further information on descriptive review. Author information is included. (JB)
