Black Adolescence: Topical Summaries and Annotated Bibliographies of Research.
Consortium for Research on Black Adolescence, Storrs, CT.
A review of studies on black youth indicates a need for more attention to research concerns such as theory development, carefully constructed methodologies, and sensitivity to the interrelatedness among and between demographic variables. Some topics, like the well-adjusted black adolescent, are rarely handled in empirical studies. In this document some of the most important empirical and theoretical research in nine areas of concern for black adolescents has been assembled. Attempts are made to point out methodological problems and to identify gaps in the knowledge base. Each section includes a topical summary of the research in a given area, annotations of selected works, and a list of other references. The section topics (with their authors) are the following: (1) psychosocial development (R. Taylor); (2) psychosocial health (H. Ramseur); (3) drug abuse (P. McKenry); (4) suicide (P. McKenry); (5) academic-related behavior (S. Nettles); (6) education and occupational choice (C. Carter); (7) family-adolescent relationships (P. Bell-Scott); (8) sexuality and contraception (J. Pleck); and (9) teen parenting (J. Everett). A project summary contains information about the consortium which produced this report and about its contributing members. (VM)
