1001 Alternatives to Corporal Punishment. A Practical Handbook of Outrageous, Original and Sometimes Useful Ideas.
Maurer, Adah
Promoting nonviolent school discipline, this handbook describes a wide variety of punitive and preventive approaches practiced in American schools. After introductory passages discussing resistance to change and the declining but persistent use of corporal punishment, part one discusses the following topics under the heading "Punishments": suspension and expulsion, embarrassment, threats, behavior modification, assertive discipline, codes of conduct, a scout leader's "fun" alternatives, and in-school suspension. Part two contains 16 examples of preventive approaches intended to promote self-discipline and self-esteem among students, improve teachers' interactions with students, and/or improve the school environment. These approaches include body language, Montessori education, conflict resolution, Teacher Effectiveness Training, the use of praise, and a summer "traveling school." (MCG)
