Using Textbooks Effectively. TESOL Classroom Practice Series
Savova, Lilia, Ed.
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL)
This volume in the TESOL Classroom Practice Series asks one fundamental question, "How can teachers teach the students, not the book?" The response, given within "Using Textbooks Effectively", is to move beyond the textbook as a separate entity and view it instead as part of the ESOL curriculum process and as a tool for student learning. The chapters illustrate textbook use as a dynamic component of the ESOL classroom ecosystem, consisting of the classroom, the world outside the classroom, and the different communities of language practice. The practitioners in this volume link ESOL textbook use to the three corresponding uses of English: for academic purposes, for social interaction, and for pragmatically appropriate expression in different discourse communities in and beyond the classroom. "Using Textbooks Effectively" offers ESOL students, teachers, administrators, and specialists insights into the use of textbooks and course materials in specific environments. It also charts strategies for adapting textbooks for different purposes and provides examples of effective classroom applications. Most important, it empowers materials users and designers with the confidence to craft unique learning opportunities. This book contains 12 chapters. Chapters are: (1) Textbook Use as Part of the ESOL Classroom Ecosystem: Teaching the Students, Not the Book (Lilia Savova); (2) Thinking Out of the Textbook: Toward Authenticity and Politeness Awareness (Clarice S. C. Chan); (3) Updating the Science Textbook to Help English Language Learners Integrate Science and Technology (Eileen N. Whelan Ariza, Philomena Marinaccio-Eckel, and Elena Webb); (4) Learning to Read and Reading to Learn From a Science Textbook (Marietta Bradinova); (5) Speaking the Reading: Orally Reconstructing Written Texts (Christopher Stillwell); (6) The Case of a Playful Text (Madhavi Gayathri Raman and Vijaya); (7) Adapting a Japanese High School Textbook to Teach Reading Microskills Communicatively (Patrick Rosenkjar); (8) Beyond the Book: Using Teacher-Learner Co-constructed Texts to Supplement ESOL Textbooks (Graeme Ritchie); (9) A Choice-Motivated, Textbook-Anchored Curriculum for Advanced Language Learners (Natalie Hess); (10) Macroadaptations of Textbooks for Particular Classroom Settings (Jia Zhimei, Xu Mengqing, Li Ning, and Li Hailin); (11) Working With Texts to Develop ESOL Reading Strategies (Deoksoon Kim); and (12) Unlocking the Visual Puzzle: Understanding Textbook Design (Tammy R. Jones and Gabriela Kleckova). References, and an index are also included.
