Academic dishonesty is not new, but recent research reviews and the media indicate that its prevalence is on the rise and that it erodes public confidence in academia. Such loss can be ill afforded at at time when the costs of education are increasing, and both federal and public funding are decreasing. The author discusses: (1) What is academic dishonesty and why does it happen? (2) What are its effects, and why must they be addressed? (3) How prevalent is it? and (4) What has been done to address it, and what else should or can be done? Positive and negative examples are provided, and resources and recommendations are included to help community colleges take measures to ensure academic integrity on their campuses.
