Since 1993, Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) has placed nearly 300 college students into summer internships with farmworker agencies in North and South Carolina, where students work alongside farmworkers struggling to improve their living and working conditions. Because of significant gaps in academic materials related to farmworkers in the Southeast, SAF commissioned this book to introduce students, faculty, and advocates to a broad spectrum of farmworker issues and advocacy. Geffert); (5) "Farmworker Exceptionalism under the Law: How the Legal System Contributes to Farmworker Poverty and Powerlessness" (Greg Schell); (6) "Bitter Harvest: Housing Conditions of Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers" (Christopher Holden); (7) "The Struggle for Health in Times of Plenty" (Colin Austin); (8) "Understanding the Challenges and Potential of Migrant Students" (Ramiro Arceo, Joy Kusserow, Al Wright); (9) "From Slavery to Cesar Chavez and Beyond: Farmworker Organizing in the United States" (Paul Ortiz); and (10) "Conclusion: An Invocation To Act" (Melinda F. Wiggins). Between the chapters are excerpts from speeches and interviews with farmworkers and activists and farmworkers' reminiscences and poetry. Appendices present a syllabus for a 14-week college course on farmworker advocacy, and list farmworker-related organizations and agencies and recommended readings.
