Developing Educational Leaders. A Working Model: The Learning Community in Action.
Norris, Cynthia J.; Barnett, Bruce G.; Basom, Margaret R.; Yerkes, Diane M.
In this book, a working model for leadership development is presented, resulting from groundbreaking work with learning communities in educational leadership preparation programs. Chapter 1 develops the concept of a learning community as both a structure for the delivery of course content (the product) and a laboratory for promoting collaborative or transformational leadership values (the process). Chapter 2 explores the notion that leadership is developed in a hierarchical fashion through phases of values awareness. Chapter 3 examines the relationship between school leaders' espoused theory and values (as articulated during their learning-community experience), and their theory in use (as demonstrated in their actions as school leaders). In chapter 4, the theories of transactional and transformational leadership are explored. Chapter 5 introduces the nature of the leadership-development curriculum delivered within a learning-community setting. Chapter 6 discusses the development of transformational leaders who possess higher levels of values consciousness and are capable of empowering others. An epilogue concludes this exploration of learning communities in which the authors describe their personal experiences as a cohort, despite working in different universities.
