Learning through Literacy: Adapting Novels by Roald Dahl for Students in Self-Contained or Inclusive Classrooms. The Professional Growth Series.
Brady, Kathleen; Phelan, Eileen
Stories are a good way to teach students numerous skills from reading comprehension to vocabulary--and this holds true even for special needs students. This book aims to guide teachers and librarians in helping grades 3-5 special education students meet the content standards produced by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. With simple and fun ways to promote books and activities that are both instructionally and emotionally appropriate for students with reading disabilities, this comprehensive guide, organized through Bloom's Taxonomy, can also serve as a companion teaching manual to the works of author Roald Dahl, helping students with genre and author studies--selections include "The Magic Finger,""Fantastic Mr. Fox," and"George's Marvelous Medicine." The guide contains teaching aids that encourage the development of critical thinking skills, as well as sections devoted entirely to increasing vocabulary and preparing for standardized reading tests. The guide can also be used as a college textbook to teach students how to modify regular education material for special needs students. (NKA)
