Too Much Time on Sycamore Street: A Self-Help Resource for Adolescents and Adults with Learning Disabilities.
Bauer, James J.
This book is specifically written for dyslexic or learning disabled individuals seeking insight into their disorder and its effects on their lives. The material is divided into 52 chapters, which are written expressly so that they will not be intimidating to learning disabled individuals. The chapters are drawn from issues that the author is asked about most frequently from his lectures, the support groups he facilitates, and his correspondence with learning disabled adults. The chapters are not intended to provide specific answers to individual issues, but rather to facilitate making decisions about these issues. The author contends that dyslexic individuals spend too much time avoiding certain situations. The mere anticipation of being requested to read, write and spell causes many to launch into a defense cycle, which results in a lack of participation in things that could be beneficial. Selective chapters include: "Self-Esteem,""Job-Seeking Skills,""Finding a Tutor,""Starting a Support Group,""Parenting an LD Child,""Picking a Therapist,""Advocating for Yourself,""The Ability to Change,""Assertiveness: The Express Lane,""Responsible to Self," and "Learning to See Further."
