This book explains federal guidelines for program directors and child care personnel for daily practices and procedures when children with disabilities are admitted to child care programs. The handbook addresses inclusion issues to raise the importance of involving all staff in preparation for efforts to become an inclusive program. Part I begins with definitions of federal laws such as the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1990 and the mandates contained in these acts in terms of provisions for serving children with disabilities. Part II serves as a guide for administrators who want to make inclusion work in their programs and explains the building process child care staff will face to create a supportive environment for the disabled child. Part III discusses the real-world problems and situations that staff will have to grapple with in implementing an inclusive program for preschoolers; included are ideas about what works, how-to techniques, and examples of appropriate and inappropriate program practices.
