This book reviews the history of academic criminal justice--the studying and teaching of crime, police, law and legal processes, and corrections--from 1870 to the present. The nine chapters have the following titles: (1) "Introduction: Academic Politics and Professionalism, 1870-1930"; (2) "Progressivism and Police Education, 1910-1935"; (3) "V-Men and Models of Police Education, 1935-1950"; (4) "Berkeley Renaissance, 1945-1960"; (5) "The International Association of Police Professors, 1963-1970"; (6) "The Fall of the School of Criminology at Berkeley, 1960-1975"; (7) "A Tale of Two Campuses: Criminal Justice Education in New York, 1965-1980"; (8) "Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Hard Labor Creek Group, 1970-1980"; and (9) "Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Politics of Populism, 1975-1985." An epilogue notes similarities and differences between criminal justice and other academic disciplines. Appendices provide lists of: persons interviewed for the book; past presidents of the International Association of Police Professors and Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences; and past presidents of the Society for the Advancement of Criminology and American Society of Criminology.
