The Way We Grow: Good-Sense Solutions for Protecting Our Families from Pesticides in Food.
Garland, Anne Witte; And Others
This book, sponsored by a group called Mothers & Others for a Livable Planet, shows parents and others why they should care about the way food is grown in America, how the food production system needs to be changed, and ways to make it better for their families and communities. Chapter 1 details why the current food production system needs to be changed and discusses government pesticide regulations and farm policies. Chapter 2 relates how positive change is possible through developments in food production, such as the increased market in organically grown foods and interest in reducing pesticide use. Chapter 3 advises parents on protecting their families from potentially harmful pesticide residues in food. It also discusses sources of food grown with few or no pesticides, how to increase access to such food, and ways food can be more affordable to all families. Chapter 4 serves as a primer for organizing and advocating critical reforms in government policies. It outlines the Mothers & Others agenda for a new food system and provides postcards and sample letters directed to key government officials. A list of 15 publications and 41 organizations concerned with agriculture, pesticides, or food safety is included in this chapter. (TJQ)
