Alumni Continuing Education.
Calvert, Steven L.
The role of colleges in providing lifelong education for alumni is considered. The book traces 75 years of alumni continuing education, with special attention to the years between 1956 and 1966, the beginning of the modern alumni continuing education era. Guidelines are offered for organizing and planning an alumni lifelong education program, and model programs appropriate to different college types are described. The types of programs that work best in the 1980s are addressed. Consideration is given to alumni colleges with different formats and schedules, including those that are held on the weekend, midweek, and for a period of one week, and those that focus on single or multiple themes or specific skills. Alumni seminars are also discussed, with attention to formats, schedules, off-campus options, and themes. Additional topics include planning alumni colleges abroad, planning media and special programs, choosing faculty and curriculum, alumni relations, financing programs, marketing and promotion, institutional governance, career and job counseling, and volunteerism. Ways to expand the relationship between adults and universities are explored. A resource list of experienced professionals in alumni continuing education is appended. (SW)
