Handbook of Educational Supervision: A Guide for the Practitioner. Third Edition.
Marks, James Robert; And Others
This handbook offers educational supervisors specific, practical assistance in performing their main job: instructional improvement. Basic supervision principles have been drawn from scientific research; the "how-to" sections of the book have been garnered from experience. Part I, "Planning for the Supervisory Program," provides background information explaining the roles of federal, state, and intermediate agencies and recommending various organizational and leadership approaches. Part II covers implementation strategies concerned with staff development, supervisory visits and follow-up conference, faculty meetings, teacher evaluations, the understanding and guidance of children, curriculum development, instructional media, and library facilities. Part III deals with support, supervisory personnel, and professional responsibilities, including community relations development, personnel recruitment and selection, program evaluation, and maintenance of professional status. In addition to basic principles, each chapter contains case studies, illustrations, lists of practical suggestions, do's and don'ts, in-basket problems, questions, suggested activities, and updated bibliographies. Appendix A is concerned with helping teachers understand tests and measurements; Appendix B is a program evaluation checklist for staff development programs. (MLH)
