The Intercultural Traveler: A Teacher's Guide. Occasional Paper No. 4.
Salinger, Marion C., Ed.
This handbook is designed to assist teachers in obtaining a degree of awareness and sensitivity to another culture. It was specifically developed for the teacher traveling in a foreign country. The introduction examines the role of the teacher in traveling, identifies some of the reasons for teacher travel abroad, and looks at the impact of the American tourist on foreign people. Chapter I offers suggestions on defining travel goals and appraising the chances of their attainment, while the second chapter defines the concept of culture. Chapter III offers suggestions on observing a foreign culture, conversing with foreigners, and recording travel impressions. Potential problems such as time, place, and culture shock, cultural biases, and attaining rapport with members of the host society are identified in Chapter IV. Chapter V outlines a checklist designed to assist the teacher in observing the host society, its people, and their culture. A bibliography of books and films, selected to help the uninitiated traveler become familiar with a new culture, are listed in Chapter VI, while Chapter VII offers suggestions on vaccinations and wardrobe. Ideas on communicating the travel experience in the classroom are given in Chapter VIII. (Author/JK)
