Students' Rights: Issues in Constitutional Freedoms. The Analysis of Public Issues Program.
Knight, Richard S.; And Others
This monograph examines the broad topic of student rights and focuses in turn on a number of related constitutional issues. Chapter 1 outlines some of the social changes affecting American education and briefly touches on many of the sources of school-based conflict. Chapter 2 deals specifically with the issue of school dress codes and efforts by school officials to control students' appearance. Chapter 3 examines students' rights to freedom of expression and the limits on those rights in the school setting. Chapter 4 discusses the right to privacy as it applies to students in school. Chapter 5 touches briefly on the issues of student freedom, school discipline, and students' constitutional right to due process. Chapter 6 reviews some of the social problems facing American schools and examines the philosophical issue of how much freedom is too much. The book is intended for possible use in secondary social studies classes and presents suggested student exercises and assignments. (JG)
