Readings and Feelings: An Introduction to Subjective Criticism.
Bleich, David
The course of study described in this book aims to enlarge the normal purview of literary study to include the subjective cases and purposes for reading and coming to literary judgments. Although the sequence of the four phases in this study should be maintained, the time spent on each phase may last a semester, a year, or longer. The four phases are: "Thoughts and Feelings," an exploration of the nature of feelings and how to distinguish between feeling and thought; "Feelings about Literature," a study of the normal capacity for emotional response in the context of a literary stimulus; "Deciding on Literary Importance," an examination of the relationship between intellectual judgment and emotional response; and "Interpretation as a Communal Act," a study of the interest of others in one's own responses and interpretations. The last section of this book contains suggestions for using the book in the classroom. (JM)
