A study of the treatment of contemporary America in textbooks of other countries reveals the impressions gained by secondary school students in those countries from textbook reading and discloses ways in which these books mention American character, culture, and institutions. Passages selected from secondary level textbooks of 19 countries in various parts of the world are presented with brief comment and analysis. Selections are grouped in chapters entitled The American Way of Life, Cities and Their Problems, Minorities, The Political Process, The American Dollar at Home, The American Dollar Abroad, Peace and War, and The American Character. While not to be considered a definitive sample of attitudes toward the United States held by the rest of the world, the collection does present a wide spectrum of views of modern America and points out differences as an aid to careful and critical thought about American problems.
