"Doing Theology" in Conversation
Ehrensperger, Kathy
Journal of Beliefs & Values, v32 n2 p265-268 2011
This article presents the author's review of "Revisiting Christianity: theological reflections," by Marius C. Felderhof. This volume by a dedicated teacher and theologian is rooted in, and emerged from, the context of teaching Christian theology to young students of very diverse backgrounds and contexts of life. The commitment to engage in conversation in the classroom and beyond, and the passion for life in and with its fragility and transience, is present on every page of this book, which Felderhof describes as "a modest contribution in the endeavour to keep alive the discussion in the public square of what should truly matter to us" (Preface, 9). Felderhof presents an unusual approach to theology in many ways. He situates his reflections clearly in the context of secular and religiously plural societies in which Christianity has lost a self-evident significance and has become one option of framing one's life among others, religious or non-religious. This context is the decisive location of Felderhof's revisiting of Christianity in that the common ground from which a meaningful conversation could begin cannot be a shared faith but rather a shared aspect of human life.
