Wang, L. Ling-chi – Amerasia Journal, 1990
Commends the book as a general introduction. Finds, however, that much of the material is secondary, with insufficient attribution. The book's coverage of the postwar period is largely anecdotal and does not record the recent emergence of ethnic and political consciousness, community organization, and artistic expression among Asian Americans. Chan, Sucheng – Amerasia Journal, 1990
"Strangers from a Different Shore" paints a panoramic vista, speaks with an epic voice, is easy to read, but contains many misleading statements and imprecise generalizations. The author fails to acknowledge his debt to other researchers and writers. (DM)

Kim, Elaine H. – Amerasia Journal, 1990
"Strangers from a Different Shore" makes significant use of Asian-American literature, especially autobiography, but consistently misses the women's viewpoints of themselves and their experiences. Cites interesting and pertinent material might have been included. Calls for a feminist treatment of this subject. (DM)

Gong, Anson – Amerasia Journal, 1989
The book, "New Voices: Student Political Activism in the '80s and '90s," is reviewed as a good but outdated treatment of student political activism. Three main weaknesses are the following: (1) only a White liberal viewpoint is given; (2) the activism of non-White students is neglected; and (3) the geographical treatment is skewed to…

Louie, Ai-Ling – Journal of Youth Services in Libraries, 1993
Examines and reviews eight young adult novels about Asian Americans, focusing on readability and the portrayal of stereotypes. Discussed are story lines, character development, gender roles, and the conclusion that, in all but one novel, Asian Americans are stereotyped as weak and inferior or as sex objects. Nicolai, Margaret – Canadian Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education, 1997
Reviews a guide to children's literature for and about Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Suggests ways to improve the book's usefulness, including a more global perspective, more rigorous research about specific cultural references, and better student activities. Notes the work's strengths, including its…

Nankano, Roy – Amerasia Journal, 1989
The book "1968: A Student Generation in Revolt" is a valuable source for understanding international protest politics. Asian American students were active in the protests of the 1960s although the book does not acknowledge them. Some events of the rebellion were repeated in the Asian American community in the 1970s. Skerry, Peter – Public Interest, 1991
Reviews James Fallows's "More Like Us: Making America Great Again," a book conceived while he resided in Japan. Fallows stresses the virtues of individualism and competition. He advocates workfare, education vouchers, and generous immigration levels. He pays little attention, however, to the institutions that nurture and temper individualism. (DM)
