Factors Contributing to the Retention of Early Career Special Educators
Elizabeth E. Sikora
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The University of Wisconsin - Madison
Research focusing on retention is vital for addressing the shortage of qualified special educators. In this phenomenological study, therefore, 21 early career special educators in Wisconsin were interviewed to investigate what factors most motivated them to continue in their profession. The study also examined how early career special educators experienced their roles, an assumed indirect impact on their retention. The findings of the study revealed a number of key themes in the participants' role experiences: who they are, what they do, and where they work. It also identified a number of retention factors: the role of a special educator, engaging in worthwhile work, and considering all options. The study concludes by offering recommendations for PK-12 schools and educator preparation programs to boost retention by accounting for school climate and culture based on participants' role experiences and retention.
