Birds of Prey of Wisconsin.
Hamerstrom, Frances
This copiously illustrated document is designed to be a field quide to birds of prey that are common to Wisconsin, as well as to some that enter the state occasionally. An introduction discusses birds of prey with regard to migration patterns, the relationship between common names and the attitudes of people toward certain birds, and natural signs that indicate the occurrence of certain types of birds. A section on hawks, vultures and eagles contains silhouette patterns, drawings, a simple dichotomous key, and specific information about buteos, accipiters, falcons, harriers, osprey, eagles, and vultures. The section on owls explains some of the special adaptations that owls possess, along with drawings, a dichotomous key, and information on ten owls that are common to Wisconsin. A special section addresses birds of prey that may be rare worldwide, or at least are rarely seen in Wisconsin. Specifications and tips about building nest boxes are included, along with a list of the scientific names of the birds described, and a reference list of books and organizations which relate to birds of prey.
