To assess the relationship between the competencies taught in ten Wisconsin two-year Associate Degree Electronic Technology programs and the competencies needed on the job, a study surveyed program graduates and employers of graduates regarding the effectiveness of the curriculum. The survey instruments were based on the 120 broad competencies developed for ten required Electronic Technology courses offered at Gateway Technical Institute which was implementing competency-based Education. Graduates were asked to complete a questionnaire asking if they were working as electronic technicians or in a related field; they were also asked to complete a survey on which they reacted on a Likert-type scale regarding importance of job, preparation at school, and adequacy of instructional equipment for each competency. Some graduates were also interviewed. The employer survey requested scaled reactions regarding importance of job and preparation at school. Responses were summarized for graduates working as electronic technicians and in related fields; for employers; for comparison of graduates and employers; and for the interviews. Employers and graduates were also asked three survey questions concerning qualification in job-entry skills, the two areas of best preparation, and the two areas of least adequate preparation.
