West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission
In this document, the West Virgina Higher Education Policy Commission provides a statistical evaluation of enrollment rates, academic achievement, scholarships and loans, training, and recruitment of students at major health sciences and rural health schools in West Virginia. Some of the highlights from this 2005 Report Card include: (1) Almost 39% of West Virginia's recent medical school graduates are staying in the state after completing residency training; (2) Retention of state medical school graduates who complete residency training in West Virginia is even higher--79% in primary care fields such as family practice; (3) In the past 9 years, the greatest change has been in retention of medical graduates in primary care fields--Their numbers have increased from 168 to 293, a gain of 74%; (4) The Rural Health Education Partnerships (RHEP) completed mergers and consolidations that resulted in 8 training consortia, compared to 13 in 1995--These changes are designed to achieve greater efficiencies while maintaining program quality; and (5) In the past 7 years, the number of physicians who participated in the RHEP program and are now in rural practice increased from 88 to 187, an increase of 113%, or an average annual rate of 13.4%.
