More Students Seek Campus Jobs as Work-Study Positions Dwindle

As more college students are relying on part- or full-time work to help pay for their education, federally financed work-study jobs are becoming harder to find. The percentage of freshmen who planned to hold full-time jobs while in college jumped to 4.7 percent this year, from 2.7 percent in 2000. But as more students are seeking jobs, federal work-study funds decreased by $9.9-million this academic year, to $980.4-million. The Federal Work-Study Program allots money to colleges to pay students for part-time work, either on the campus or with local nonprofit agencies. Determining how many eligible students to offer work-study to each year is tricky, says Sharon Welsh, director of student employment at Rutgers University at New Brunswick. Not all students offered the aid take it, and those who do may not end up working their scheduled number of hours. Welsh tries to find students jobs based on their interests, but not every match works out, particularly when students sign up for the university's animal farm.
