Counseling Center Leadership for the Future: Diversity, Not Division
Colbs, Sandy L.
Journal of College Student Psychotherapy, v26 n2 p80-82 2012
In this article, the author shares her thoughts about the need to maintain certain philosophical foundations of counseling center theory and practice taught to her by her mentors and rooted in what was once the "radical" thinking of the mid-1970s. She feels compelled to speak about this because she is noticing that fewer and fewer of her peers share the professional "upbringing" that to her was and is so critical in framing the work that they do. The counseling center directors of the future are almost certainly less likely to be trained in counseling psychology programs than has been the case in the past. Neither will they necessarily be people who have previously worked in college and university counseling centers. Many will come from "the private sector," a landscape that for some is a complete unknown. While some will bring an immediate understanding of a systems/ecological philosophy (however it's expressed), some will not. The counseling center leadership ranks are becoming increasingly diverse in exciting ways; the author calls on those in the counseling psychology field not to allow that to mean that they become "diffuse" in their perspective, nor let diversity lead to division.
