Instructional Leadership: Building Relationships and Community Partnerships
Jennifer Cooper
Knowledge Quest, v52 n1 p10-18 2023
As many school librarians start their career they often feel comfortable taking on the job of instructional partner. Becoming an instructional leader in your school requires having a seat at the table. Building relationships with the various community stakeholders sets the tone for the author's school library and their leadership as an instructional leader. Being a collaborative partner in the school's instructional goals enables the growth of the school librarian and the school library. When the author started in a new school a few years ago, the decided to institute a "menu" of the library services that were offered. Letting the faculty know what you have to offer and how you can help them is a great first step in building a relationship. When the author started their career as a school librarian they wanted to reach out to all stakeholders with a newsletter, which allowed them to share what was happening in the school library as well as resources available. The author heard a librarian at an elementary school speak about her Take 5 at every faculty meeting. The author made sure to do this at the school libraries they have worked in. At some schools this was monthly; in others it was quarterly. In one newsletter the author wrote about their "pre-made" lessons adaptable for different subjects. One of the author's co-workers once said her favorite method of building relationships was the hallway conversation. In March 2020, students, teachers, and school librarians had to adjust how they learned, taught, and provided services. School librarians continued to provide readers advisory, research lessons, book clubs, technical assistance, and more. Sharing knowledge is key to instructional leadership, whether it is learning about a new platform or program and passing along that information to the school community or engaging in a learning experience with fellow librarians.
