Interlibrary Loan Manual, 1982. A Guide to the I.L.L. Services Provided by the Virginia State Library. Revised.
Hehman, Thomas J., Comp.
Guidelines and sample multi-part forms for interlibrary lending in Virginia are presented in this manual, which updates a 1978 edition by including material on the Catalog of Virginia Library Resources (CAVALIR). CAVALIR is a statewide computer output microfiche (COM) catalog of library holdings, prepared from the contributions of 61 Virginian public, academic, and special libraries to the OCLC database. The manual provides: (1) a discussion of the responsibilities and collections of the Virginia State Library; (2) background information on interlibrary lending in Virginia; (3) details of the Virginia State Library interlibrary loan services and policies; (4) guidelines for conducting patron interviews; (5) guidelines for verifying interlibrary loan requests, using CAVALIR and other sources; (6) rules for submitting interlibrary loan requests; and (7) a checklist of interlibrary loan dos and don'ts. Although it is noted that interlibrary loan requests can be sent via the OCLC Interlibrary Loan system, instructions are given only for submitting telephone requests and requests using American Library Association (ALA) forms. A total of 18 ALA form examples are presented showing title, periodical article, subject, and out-of-state requests, as well as packing, renewal, report on request, and notice of return slips. A discussion of the impact of copyright legislation on interlibrary lending and a list of CAVALIR libraries are appended. (ESR)
