Major state legislative actions affecting higher education in Virginia are summarized. Subjects of the bills include: tuition assistance grant and loan program, sales tax on textbooks, engineering study, National Guard tuition grants, the Freedom of Information Act, committees supervising faculty experiments, approval of institutions to operate in the state, alcohol fuels, student aid, programs for the learning disabled, reading instruction, vocational-technical education, teacher preparation programs, agriculture programs, health and physical education instruction, and an eminent scholars program. A brief analysis is given of higher education appropriations, and charts detail appropriations for operating expenses and capital outlay at all levels, in each institution, by program category (educational and general programs, financial aid, auxiliary enterprises).
