Individualizing Instruction. Foreign Languages in Virginia Schools, No. 4.
Virginia State Dept. of Education, Richmond. Foreign Language Service.
This publication is one of a series designed to inform and assist those responsible for foreign language instruction, including teachers, administrators, supervisors, and those engaged in teacher education. The complete series serves as a curriculum guide. The format of the series is such that it can be revised so as to keep materials current. Each publication is punched so that it may be placed in a binder. This volume provides an introduction to the concept of individualization and suggests techniques for individualizing instruction in the foreign language classroom. The many forms of individualization are discussed, including the continuous progress system. A basic component of any kind of individualized instruction, performance objectives, are also discussed, as well as terminal course objectives, student evaluation, credit, the role of the teacher in a self-paced program, and evidence regarding the success of continuous progress foreign language programs. Options in individualizing instruction are examined, such as mini-courses or language courses for a particular purpose. Guidelines are provided for individualizing instruction. Finally, the relationship between individualization and humanization in language teaching is discussed briefly. (Author/AM)
