Young Adults Do Not Think World Knowledge Is Vital
Manzo, Kathleen Kennedy
Education Week, v25 n36 p8 May 2006
A new survey has found that most young adults in the United States have difficulty identifying Iraq on an unlabeled map of the Middle East, or are unaware that the population of China is more than four times that of the United States. This lack of geographic literacy goes beyond simple gaps in knowledge and skills for most of these people do not believe in the importance of knowing about the world. Released by the National Geographic Education Foundation, the survey was conducted in person in late 2005 and early 2006 with a nationally representative sample of 510 adults, 18 to 24 years old. Participants were asked to locate specific countries on a map, to identify important issues in current events, and to describe political and economic concerns in other regions of the world.
