Developing Language Objectives for English Language Learners in Physical Education Lessons
Clancy, Mary E.; Hruska, Barbara L.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v76 n4 p30 Apr 2005
Drawing on the unique opportunities that physical education settings provide, physical education specialists can assist English language learners (ELLs) in developing language by implementing language objectives in their lessons. Language objectives encourage teachers to provide explicit language instruction and language support for students who are learning English as a new language. The objectives state what students at varying levels of English proficiency will be able to do with language during the course of the lesson. Language components to consider when developing language objectives are vocabulary, language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), language functions, and language structures or sentence patterns. This article provides the teacher with tools to develop language objectives for physical education lessons and includes sample objectives at elementary and secondary levels. With this information, the physical education teacher will be better equipped to meet the linguistic needs of ELL students and help these students participate successfully in physical education lessons.
