Chinese Students Experiences at New England University and Its Influence on Future Enrollment: A Phenomenological Study
Thomas Llewellyn Pack
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
This study addressed the declining market share of students from the Peoples Republic of China at a university in the New England region of the United States. This study focused on six students from the People's Republic of China's lived experiences and how those experiences influence future enrollments. The process selected for this study was a qualitative methodology using phenomenology design. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory and Bandura's social learning theory were the theoretical orientations for guiding this study. As described by Lazersfield, the qualitative methodology allowed students during multiple interviews through open-ended questions to describe their thoughts, opinions, and experiences in detail. The phenomenological design is based on Husserl's precepts that the first-person account of an experience allows for expansive and considered responses. Trustworthiness, accomplished through multiple in-depth interviews and member checking, concentrated on relationship building as part of the data gathering process. In addition, a constant comparative to analyze data with a team of six multi-cultural peer reviewers ensured accuracy. The findings have shown that students from the Peoples Republic of China have limited effect on future enrollments at the target university; however, students' parents have the potential to increase enrollments through more extensive sociocultural networks. Implications and recommendations were discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
